Kazinga Channel

The Kazinga channel with a 32km width is a water body connecting two lakes; Lake George and Edward in the east and west respectively. Kazinga channel is another attraction that lures tourists to Queen Elizabeth National park. Not to forget that it is a habitat to numerous animal species especially hippopotami and crocodiles.

Lake George is a small lake that flows through Kazinga channel and drains west into Lake Edward, a fresh water lake that is quite bigger compared to Lake Edward. The streams from Mt.Rwenzori are the source of water that flows into Lake George.

At the shores of the channel, one gets an opportunity to catch a sight at quite a number of animal species, bird species. The channel is a one of the biggest hippopotami in the whole world; quite a number of hippos live here and reptiles too.  When on a boat cruise, you can get the best view of the hippos and crocodiles along the channel. These boat cruises are scheduled to run from 3pm to 5pm Ugandan time however expeditions occur at from 11am to 1pm. The booking of these activities happens at Mweya Safari lodge.

The channel is subdivided into the North Kazinga and Kasenyi plains. Most of the action takes place in the Kasenyi plains as they offer the most memory worthy view of the wild life. The best experience of taking in the beautiful natural scenery is on the tracking expedition through the Northern Kazinga to Mweya. The game drive experience is pre-eminent with a superlative guide.

Getting There

The Boat cruise launches from the Mweya peninsula, which is 20 km west of Kasese-Mbarara main road. Vehicles roving about Mbarara and Kasese go through Katunguru. Exclusive transportation for hire is available In Katunguru trading center  charging Ush30,000 for a one way  to Mweya Lodge.
