THE SIPI FALLS

The Sipi falls

The Sipi falls, found in Eastern Uganda, Kapchorwa district about 277km from Kampala city. It is found on the foothills of Mount Elgon National Park which to the Uganda-Rwanda border. “Sipi” is a Sabiny word for a wild banana like plant used to treat certain illnesses like measles and fever that grows along the river bank, hence the name “Sipi falls”.

The falls originate from the hot springs that flow on Sipi River, on Mount Elgon, flowing from a high cliff to the bottom creating a series of rapids that flow to Lake Kyoga. Sipi falls has three different levels of waterfalls, each with a different altitude, the highest being 100meters, which is also the biggest fall in the series. The other two falls are 85and 75 meters respectively.

These waterfalls give a very beautiful scenery to trekkers, and it is where trekkers start their hike. The hike lets ne explore the beautiful slopes of Mountain Elgon as you wade through the coffee plantations, Lake Kyoga and Karamoja region.

The water falls form a nice shower that can be enjoyed after the long sweltering hike. There is also a cave where that is like a curtain from the falls, where one can sit and enjoy the cooling breeze from the falls whilst taking various beautiful pictures.

Sipi is generally a cool place due to its hilly nature and is favorable for tourists longing for this kind of weather. Take care though when it is wet as the area becomes slippery yet it is hilly so, it is quite challenging to navigate through.

Having engaged in the activities at the Falls, be sure of decent accommodation awaiting you that can be booked prior to the visit or at that very moment, by yourself or with the help of your tour operator.
