Narus Valley of Kidepo
Narus Valley of Kidepo in Ng’akarimojong language, Narus loosely translates to “muddy ground/soggy place”. Given the semi-arid conditions in the area, Narus is therefore legendary in providing water for the herds of livestock possessed by the Karamojong. The valley stretches from Mountain Morungole, North East of Apoka, towards the Kidepo Valley National Park Plains in the North, onto South Sudan.
The soils in the Narus Valley are loamy with clay unlike much of the Karamoja region with sandy soils. Swamp and wetland vegetation In the valley retain water in pools during the rainy season, and this water can last up to when the season is dry. The herbivores wildlife can be spotted in this valley as it is a source of food and water.
Narus valley is composed of magnificent hills rolling Northwards, vegetation cover of grassland with red oats, guinea grass, thorny acacias, sausage trees, scattered in all corners to give the valley a perfect definition of beautiful African savannahs. At the bottom of the valley is River Narus which floods the valley during the rainy season, causing different wildlife species to congregate here for survival, in terms of water and food. Lions, cheetahs, caracal, giraffes, hyenas, waterbucks and the bush pig are some of the animals that can be found here.
Also, birds like the ostrich, carmine, hoopoe, karamoja apalis and the little weaver can be spotted around the Narus Valley. The beautiful short savannah make game spotting easy during hikes and nature walks. The hike is a great opportunity of exploring the wilderness and discovering the beauty of nature hidden from the crowd of other travelers at their own place.
