Lions in Lake Mburo game park

Lions in Lake Mburo national park are quite unheard of. It is even one of the parks where nature walks strive highly because of the believed absence of lions The park once had a number of lions that were believed to be man eaters.

This issue caught the concern of the Uganda Wildlife Authority when a lion escaped the park and caused harm to about three individuals and the lion was shot. Years later other lions were reported to have attacked the neighbor and are believed to have come from an area commonly known as the “whispers of the wild”. The lions were also reported to attack the livestock of the natives who resorted to hunting and killing the lions. Other predators too fell victim during this period like hyenas and leopards.

According to Mark .R. Stanley, lions are vulnerable and easy to spot since they maintain a high profile in the jungle. Therefore it is easy for the hunters to capture and kill them. Despite the fact the lions are vulnerable; they are still the biggest predators.

Recently, about half a dozen of lions are being spotted in the Lake Mburo national park again. The scarcity of lions in Lake Mburo national park forced the Uganda wildlife Authority to shift some lions from Murchison falls national park. Others are reported to be refugees from Akagera national park in Rwanda due to the killing of wildlife that is happening in Akagera. The conflicts in Rwanda in 1990 also led to encroachment on the park which led to the killing of wildlife like lions.

However recently there has been decline in the encroachment on the park which has aided the existence of wildlife like lions. The park is now open and conducive for their existence though the lions there are quite shy therefore it is hard to spot one and that is why people assume lake Mburo has no lions.
